ProForm Frontrunner Treadmill Review

Our ProForm Frontrunner treadmill review assesses a machine that looks good value, but we have our doubts - why is that?

Well, it's largely down to ProForm's practice of tweaking and rebadging their treadmills and offering 'exclusive' deals to retailers - much like Horizon currently does.

In this case, the Frontrunner is exclusive to Sam's Club - Wal Mart's members only Shopping Club.

Hmm, exclusive? You can buy it from other online shopping sites and from Icon Health and Fitness direct - ProForm's parent company.

Anyway, the result of this practice is that the same treadmills get sold for varying prices dependant on the livery they're in.

The result is a clever marketing ploy, which to my mind isn't really in the consumer's interest - why?

ProForm Frontrunner Treadmill Review - What's it Like...?

Well, apart from a few cosmetic differences the Frontrunner is uncannily similar to the rather good value ProForm C500 treadmill.

It shares the same 2.75 HP motor - actually 1.75 HP continuous duty - capable of up to 10 mph.

The belt with its 50" x 19" walking area is identical and the deck is equipped with the ProTech cushioning system - not sure if this is an upgrade but it feels no more comfortable than the C500's ProStride cushioning.

The deck manually folds and power inclines to 10%, just as the C500 does.

The one touch speed and power incline controls are identical as are the pulse monitors and cooling fans.

The backlit ClearView display console on the C500 is replaced with the Competitor console, which for all intents and purposes does the same things.

You do get eight workouts and iFit.com compatibility, but the warranties are equally lousy.

All in all, then, the Frontrunner is a very similar package to the C500 - except for the price.

The C500 can be bought for as low as $499 with free shipping and offers exceptionally good value.

The FrontRunner is over $100 more expensive, $649 at WorkoutWarehouse plus $125 for shipping - presumably to get back some of the $350 discount from the $999 list price!

You can get the ProForm Frontrunner treadmill cheaper online from other retailers but that's not the point. This would be a decent treadmill for under $500, but it doesn't offer that much more than the C500 to justify its price tag.

  • If you want a budget treadmill to walk on then save your money and go for the ProForm C500, which is practically identical to the ProForm Frontrunner treadmill. For under $500 with free shipping it offers a much better choice.
