Spirit Z8 Treadmill Review

Our Spirit Z8 treadmill review looks at the base model in Spirit's excellent Z series treadmill range - is it a better value bet than the higher end models?

Laudable though the effort may be, the Z8 suffers from being pared back to the basics to get it under the $1,000 mark.

Granted, it's much better than many rival models in this price bracket from competitor brands, but I'd prefer to spend a couple of hundred dollars extra to buy the Z88 or Z9, which have superior specs.

So how does the Z8 fare?

Spirit Z8 Treadmill Review - What's it Like...?

Whilst certainly a good looking treadmill, take a closer look and you'll spot where the economies have been made.

You do get a pretty generous package in the Z8, but the rest of the range is simply better specified for not much more money.

The 2.0 HP continuous duty motor is OK but is the smallest unit that Spririt offers.

It has no trouble moving the 50" x 18" belt, but this is hardly the roomiest area to run on.

Not that the Z8 is really suitable for runners as the motor and deck aren't quite big enough and whilst the top speed is 10 mph, the motor sounds more comfortable at around 6-8 mph.

If you do need some added intensity in your workout, the 11% incline will come in useful

The big 2.5" rollers are a welcome addition on a treadmill under $1,000 and make for a smooth ride with no grab on the belt. The reduced friction between the rollers and belt should also minimise belt wear and help it last a bit longer.

the Z8 shares its frame with a couple of the more pricey Z series machines, and whilst not commercial quality, is pretty sturdy as is the build quality overall.

The Z8 also folds, which makes it a good choice for home trainers for whom storage space is at a premium.

However, aside from the motor and deck it's the electronics where the economies really show up.

I can't say I was that keen on the LCD display console as it's a little spare as user interfaces go.

The eight workout programs should be enough for most people and there's also a pulse grip heart monitor, but no heart rate control function.

The warranties are above average as this is an area where Spririt are particularly strong. They offer a lifetime warranty on the frame, 20 years on the motor, two years on the electronics and one year on the labour. Compare that to an equivalently priced ProForm!

The Z8 retails for $1,099, but expect to get if for much less. For example, our Spirit Z8 treadmill review found it for $888 at Elite Fitness Equipment.com with free shipping within the US.

  • There's no denying that our Spirit Z8 treadmill review has identified areas that let this model down, but it's still a pretty good treadmill for the home trainer that wants a good value machine to walk on.

I'd suggest investing a little more and stepping up to the Z88, though.
